What this site is

From 1 November 2026, visitors to Japan get the consumption tax back after Customs confirms their goods at departure. The official material is spread across the National Tax Agency, the Japan Tourism Agency and Japan Customs, and most of it is in Japanese. We read it, turned it into a checker, and list the source for each rule on the sources page.

How it is made

The pages are researched and drafted with AI assistance, then checked against the sources linked on each page. There is no named author. We have not yet used the new system at an airport, so we do not write as if we had. Where the official sources are silent, we say so.

What it is not

It is not a government site, and it is not legal or tax advice. Rules and practice can change, so confirm important purchases with the shop.
